The idea for Bo Gurks came from years spent in small bars, pubs and neighbourhood venues around the world—places where the staff knew your name, newcomers quickly became regulars, and good food and drinks brought people together.
We brought that spirit home to Edithvale and created the kind of local we wanted to visit ourselves: welcoming, unpretentious and genuinely connected to its community. Whether you visit for morning coffee, a meal, an independent Australian drink or a night out with friends, Bo Gurks is a place to relax and feel at home.
Jarred Turnbull is the owner of Bo Gurks and the driving force behind its focus on great hospitality, independent Australian producers and the Edithvale community.
Earlier in his working life, Jarred spent time in the hospitality industry, including working at a local pub in London. It was there that he saw firsthand how a good local pub could become the centre of a strong community—a place where people met, formed friendships and felt genuinely connected.
When Jarred first came to Edithvale, he immediately felt it was the perfect place to create something with that same spirit. The relaxed beachside atmosphere and strong sense of community matched his vision for a welcoming local venue.
Around eight years ago, Jarred found the right property in Edithvale to bring that vision to life: a place where locals could meet, relax and enjoy some of the best products available from Australian independent producers. That vision became Bo Gurks, which opened in 2021.
Since opening Bo Gurks, Jarred has taken a hands-on role in almost every part of the venue—from developing the food and drinks offering to hosting trivia, organising whisky tastings and creating events that bring locals together.
Jarred has a particular passion for Australian craft beer and whisky and enjoys introducing customers to independent producers and the people behind them. He believes a good local venue should be more than somewhere to eat and drink—it should be a welcoming place where people feel comfortable, connected and part of the community.
